What is the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer?
The DTZ is the language test at the end of the integration course. One test shows whether you reach A2 or B1. It checks listening (approx. 25 min), reading (45 min), writing (30 min) and speaking (approx. 16 min, usually in pairs). For B1 overall you need B1 in speaking plus B1 in listening/reading or in writing. Together with the Leben in Deutschland test it makes up the integration course certificate.

State the reason first

Common questions about DTZ
What is the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer?
The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer, or DTZ, is the language test at the end of the integration course. It is designed as an A2/B1 test and checks listening, reading, writing and speaking.
When do I reach B1 in the DTZ?
You receive B1 overall if you reach B1 in speaking and also in one of the other two areas: listening and reading together, or writing. B1 in speaking is required. Each area is scored separately and appears on the result.
How long does the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer take?
The written part takes about 100 minutes: listening about 25, reading 45 and writing 30 minutes. The speaking test takes about 16 minutes, usually in pairs and often on the same day.
Can I practise the DTZ online for free?
The exam itself takes place on site. Practice is free: official model tests are available from g.a.s.t. and telc, and BesserStudy lets you practise letters and the speaking test without an account.
Is DTZ the same as a normal B1 exam?
No. DTZ is designed for integration-course learners and everyday situations. Other B1 exams such as Goethe or telc B1 have their own formats, rules and purposes.
Is DTZ B1 enough for citizenship?
For citizenship and residence questions, always check the current authority rules. B1 is often important, but requirements come from BAMF, immigration offices or citizenship offices.
